Start from your commute, not from the map

Tokyo runs on a dense web of train and subway lines, and the number of transfers usually matters more than the distance on a map. A place that looks close can involve two changes and a long walk inside a station, while a town further out may put you on a single line, sometimes with a seat in the morning. Before you narrow down areas, check the route to your workplace or school at the hours you would actually travel, the trip home included. Morning crowding and the last useful connection at night shape a week far more than a few minutes of headline travel time.

Let your weekends shape the neighborhood

Now picture an ordinary day off. Some people want everything settled within a block of the station: groceries, a pharmacy, somewhere to eat late. Others would rather walk ten minutes into a residential street where the noise drops away, or live close to a park or a riverside path. Neither is better, and the rent tables will not tell you which one you are.
