Walk the stretch between the station and the address itself, since what sits along that route, or does not, is what you will meet every single day.

Plan for the evenings that go wrong

It is worth knowing a second route before you sign anything. Trains along this corridor run often, but they do get delayed, and on a crowded evening you may simply want to keep away from the largest station. A home with two usable lines within walking distance, or a bus route to fall back on, tends to feel easier over a long stay.

When you compare candidates, look past the minutes to Shinjuku and ask whether you can finish ordinary errands near the station. A supermarket or a drugstore on the walk home takes real weight off a long day, and late opening hours matter more than most people expect before they move.

A good number of houses in this area are older buildings that have been renovated, which is part of the appeal. Keep the character and the practical side separate when you visit: listen for sound through the windows and the walls, look closely at the kitchen and bathroom fittings, and ask how the shared areas are cleaned and by whom.
