A women-only house narrows down who lives there, and that is a useful filter to have. On its own, though, it says very little about how a particular place will feel to live in. Locks and guest rules, how many people share each shower, how much the residents mix in the kitchen at night: those are the things that shape an ordinary week, and they vary widely between houses that carry exactly the same label. Look at the building and the walk separately

Two quite different questions hide behind the word security. Inside, ask what kind of lock the entrance uses, whether the private room locks, who else holds a key, and how a lost key is handled. Outside, look at the walk between the station and the door: how many people are around in the evening, how well lit the street is, whether there is a long stretch with nothing open. If you regularly get home late, walk it once at that hour. A convenience store or a supermarket with late hours on the route is a practical landmark as well as a comfort.

Count the bathrooms, then read the rules

Showers, sinks and washing machines get crowded at predictable times, so what matters is the number of them set against how many people live in the house. Ask how many residents there are when the house is full, not only how many fixtures are installed. Then ask about the rules that govern them: the hours they can be used, whose job the cleaning is, where laundry can be dried, whether anyone limits how long you take. Small rules are what decide whether a house fits your schedule or quietly works against it.

Turn your worries into questions

Rather than treating the women-only label as the answer, name the specific situations that make you uneasy. Coming home after midnight. A delivery at the door when you are alone. A friend staying over. A housemate whose hours are the opposite of yours. Each one has a concrete question behind it that an operator can answer plainly, and once you have that list in hand, comparing houses becomes a calm, ordinary exercise instead of a guess.

The women-only condition by itself does not set a price. Read the median alongside the band where most rooms sit, and keep the distance from the station, the size of the private room and the shared facilities in view at the same time, so the comparison stays about the home rather than the label.

Three things deserve a straight answer from the operator: what locks the building and the private room have, how many people share each bathroom and washing machine when the house is full, and what the walk home from the station is like after dark. After that, check the house rules on guests and cleaning against the way you actually live, since a rule that suits an early riser can be awkward for someone who works nights. Written rules are easier to compare than impressions, so ask to see them where you can, and give all of this the same weight you give the women-only condition itself.

At a viewing, walk the route you would take every day: front door, hallway, stairs, your own room. Notice where things lock, how much of the shared area is visible from the entrance, and whether the corridors have windows or only lights. Listing photographs are taken to show off the room, not the route, so anything that concerns you is worth raising directly with the operator while you are standing there.

On the water fixtures, ask about timing as well as numbers. A house with two showers can be perfectly comfortable or genuinely difficult, depending on whether everyone leaves at the same hour. Operators field these questions constantly, and a clear answer, or the lack of one, tells you something about how the place is managed. Build your own short list of what you need in order to settle in, work through it house by house, and let the label be the starting point of the search rather than the end of it.
